Johor Rent-to-Own housing scheme needs review, says property consultant

PETALING JAYA (July 30): A property consultant has urged the Johor state government to review the Rent-to-Own (RTO) housing scheme owing to the current market condition that has been impacted by the Covid-19 outbreak, The Star report today.

KGV International Property Consultants (M) Sdn Bhd director Samuel Tan (pictured) suggested that more time be given to the tenants to convert their rental properties into homeownership as many of them have seen their income shrink due to the pandemic.

He also raised his concerns over the fact that the number of people who are qualified for the homeownership scheme might have declined as some have lost their jobs during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

The RTO housing scheme was launched under the Jauhar Prihatin programme through state-linked company Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor (KPRJ) back in 2017 but it has now been placed under the state’s secretary housing division office.

Tan noted that the entire process under the RTO scheme needed a radical review to reduce the problems faced by applicants.

Instead of applying through the state government, he suggested that the applications should be directed to the respective developers, and then submitted to the Housing Division for approval.
